Our History
Select Home Care Portland was founded in 2009 and has been providing quality, person-centered in-home care services ever since. We partner with various healthcare organizations across the greater Portland, Oregon metro area to ensure coverage is provided in a timely, yet well-planned and organized manner.

Select Home Care is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, and serves families throughout the Portland Metro Area. We are proudly veteran owned and operated.
We support veterans by identifying resources and serving with our Veteran’s Administration contract to provide care to those that qualify.
Our nursing staff oversight ensures our professional team of caregivers is up to date on the latest methods and practices as well as ensures our caregiving staff is safely performing their caregiving tasks.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide quality compassionate care while honoring and respecting the dignity of our clients and their loved ones.
Collectively, many of our staff have come up through the ranks starting out providing care and eventually moving into administration roles like recruiting, scheduling, and intake. Having been in the field and knowing the “ins and outs” of the care firsthand allows a much stronger bond and transfer of knowledge as each of our staff is willing to jump in and help out if needed.
Our Experience
We are proud to point out that our administrator has over 25 years of healthcare experience and our office staff retention average is just over 9 years. This breadth of experience positions us well to deal with almost anything that comes up, as well as the knowledge to provide vast guidance to our families to help them make the decisions necessary for the best possible care.
We would love to help you or your loved one remain safely and comfortably in their residence as long as desired and medically feasible.
We Are Your Resource
We also know that in-home care may not always be the right choice for everyone. We spend much of our time talking with clients about care needs, finances, and options.
In the end, our goal is for you to make the best choice for you and your family.
We are well versed in answering your questions relating to in-home care versus home health, medicare versus Medicaid, long-term care insurance benefits, veteran benefits, price comparisons of various living situations (independent living, assisted living, intermediate care facilities, memory care, adult care homes, etc) and much more.

Select Home Care Portland Frequently Asked Questions
Select Home Care Portland was founded locally in 2009 and is veteran-owned and operated. We are proud to hold the most advanced license (comprehensive) that the state of Oregon offers, and we hold several contracts with state and county agencies to provide care.
Despite having eight Select Home Care offices in the central and western United States, we are not a franchise. Each office is independently owned and operated. However, Select Home Care Portland is fortunate to benefit from the larger Select Home Care network through shared experiences and insights between offices. We also look to our local industry partners like rehabilitation facilities, long-term care facilities, and clients for input and feedback to continuously improve our client experience.
For many reasons, Portland offers an excellent option for retirement especially when considering the locally available healthcare. In-home care in Portland is vast and comprehensive given the population and availability of trained staff. Portland’s size and variety provide healthcare options for people of all physical conditions and socioeconomic backgrounds. Oregon also tends to rank highly among the best states to retire based on livability factors such as affordable health care, quality of care, and benefits for the elderly. From world-class hospitals to unique and inviting outdoor settings, Portland offers retirees the ability to continue to live life well through vibrant community, natural beauty, and quality healthcare.
No qualifications are necessary to receive in-home care in Oregon. At Select Home Care, we accept private pay (out-of-pocket), Long Term Care Insurance (LTCI), Worker’s Compensation Insurance and Veteran’s Aid & Attendance. However, in home care in Oregon does not currently accept Medicare and private insurance does not typically cover our services.
Oftentimes, people need assistance paying for elder care of all kinds. There are several agencies that provide resources, information, and advice to families like the Oregon Health Plan or Oregon Project Independence (OPI) which is offered through the Aging and Disability Resource Connection of Oregon (ADRC). Families who pursue these options will have to qualify. The requirements can be found on the pages linked above. There are additional benefits available to veterans offered through Aging Veterans Services. You may also find details on the Veterans Aid & Attendance program for eligible war time veterans or spouses.
If you are curious how your specific circumstances may impact your ability to receive affordable and reliable care, give Select Home Care Portland a call at (503) 488-5948. We will be happy to explain the services we can provide and point you in the right direction if you require other types of care.
In-home care is beneficial to those individuals who are having difficulty performing various activities of daily living (ADLs) and may require supervision to be safe in their own homes. They may need help with typical ADLs such as getting dressed, bathed, toileting, transferring, eating, medication administration, or reminders. They may also need help around the house such as light housekeeping, errands, grocery shopping, pet care, laundry, and transportation to and from doctor appointments.
Home Health is typical when a person has had a recent inpatient stay at a hospital, rehabilitation, or skilled nursing facility and is considered “home-bound”. Home health can also benefit those who have had recent medication changes or someone who shows a decline in overall physical functioning. A doctor’s order is required to start care and it is covered by Medicare. Home Health agencies generally employ physical, occupational, and speech therapists (PT/OT/ST) to provide care in the home once or twice a week (typically a 45-minute visit). Nursing services and bath aids are also potential options for home health. Services are time-limited (generally 100 days or less), require Doctor’s orders, and are covered by Medicare and most private insurance.
We advise families to consider and plan for aging parents or loved ones before they are hit with an “event” that has put their loved one in the hospital or a rehab center, and the family suddenly finds themselves searching for care and wondering what the next steps are.
Signs that additional care in the home may be needed are when you notice changes cognitively, physically, or emotionally with your loved one. The easiest issues to point to are a fall in the home, leaving the stove on, making poor nutritional choices, losing weight, frequent hospitalizations, taking the wrong pills, forgetting to take medications, being taken advantage of by scammers, etc.
We have two primary discounts:
#1) 5% discount for all veterans that served active duty and were honorably discharged from the U.S. military (DD-214).
#2) Many companies will up-charge for night shifts. We offer the option for discounted 10-12 hour overnight shifts. This can save a family over $1,500 per month if they qualify.
Select Home Care Portland always works to ensure our clients are able to receive the level of care they need. We provide flexible care options that accomodate most budgets. If you have questions about affording our services, please call (503) 488 5948. Please also refer to the links above that cover some of the state and county funded programs.
Yes. We have experience working with long-term care insurance providers and can provide free advice so you can be better prepared to receive and manage your LTCI claim. Our most common advice for those with questions about LTC insurance is “persistence.”
We have a 3-hour minimum per visit and a 12-hour weekly minimum. Families can meet the weekly minimum in a variety of ways, whether it is four 3-hour shifts, one 12-hour shift, or any combination in between.
For those on the other end of the care spectrum, we can offer 24/7/365 care. This is one of the ways that we differ from home health care, as detailed above.
We have served the greater Portland metro area since our founding in 2009. You can view the map of our coverage locations by clicking here.
We aim to conduct same-day care assessments and strive to begin care within 48 hours. Of course, families enjoy consistency, which is greatly improved with additional lead time. However, we always attempt to solve the care first and foremost (pulling caregivers to meet the need). We then work with the client to smooth out the consistency aspect over the next few weeks as we finalize our dedicated care team. Quick starts require us to move pieces around to solve the immediate need and then move into our long-term, more consistent approach.
For small cases (fewer hours), having 1 or 2 primary caregivers is possible. For larger cases (longer hours), additional caregivers are required to prevent overtime charges and cover sickness and vacation. We aim to provide as much consistency as possible, whether with one caregiver for a more minor case, or with a care team comprising 4-6 caregivers for cases with longer or round-the-clock hours.
We will remove any caregiver that the client is not comfortable with and provide a replacement if the caregiver isn’t comfortable with the client. Any and all complaints are taken seriously so that we can provide the best experience for our clients and the best work environment for Select Home Care Portland employees.
We follow the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) required training modules. We then supplement OHA training with additional specific training to equip our caregivers to be better prepared for cognitive impairments, medication management, fall prevention, transfer assistance, and other as-needed topics. We provide hands-on training initially, as well as online training and supplemental training throughout the year. It is truly a never-ending endeavor, and keeping up with current trends and new in-home supportive devices is a full-time job.
